ABOUTReUNION is a social and friendship group aimed at renewing / sustaining contact and friendship between the former staff of UNISON. The staff of unions that merged to create UNISON, and those of unions which have merged along the way, are also entitled to join. HISTORYReUNION came into being when members of AFNS (the Association of Former NUPE Staff) decided to open its doors to a wider membership. AFNS was created prior to the merger in 1993 of three trade unions – the National Union of Public Employees (NUPE), the National Association of Local Government Officers (NALGO), and the Confederation of Health Service Employees (COHSE) – as a means of maintaining contact and friendship amongst colleagues who had previously worked for NUPE as organisers, clerical or administrative staff, at whatever level. For more than 30 years AFNS had fulfilled its role, putting old colleagues back in touch with each other; providing opportunities to exchange and discuss experiences at work, or in retirement; providing help and advice on pensions issues, and more. Faced with the reality that there soon would be no more former NUPE staff to recruit, and a natural decline in membership, AFNS members held a ballot in January 2026 on whether to have a managed winding down of the organisation, or to remodel the organisation and offer the same benefits and comradeship to all the former staff of UNISON and its partner unions. They chose the latter.
